What SelfHostedCompare is, how it is built, and why it exists.

Why this site exists

awesome-selfhostedis the canonical list of self-hosted software, and it is excellent at what it is: a list. But a list cannot answer the question you actually have when you stand up a new service —which one should I run, and will it work on the devices I own?

SelfHostedCompare upgrades that list into three things:

  1. A verifiable data profile per app. Stars, license, latest release, deployment channels and resource notes — each value carries its source and the date it was last verified, so you can see how fresh the data is before you trust it.
  2. Auto-generated comparison pages. Head-to-head tables for the pairs people actually search for (kavita vs komga, uptime kuma vs gatus), built from the same database instead of opinion pieces.
  3. A full client platform matrix. For every app, which of the six platforms — Web, Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux — has an official or third-party client, and through which distribution channel (App Store, Google Play, F-Droid, GitHub, Flathub, official site). Nobody else aggregates this, and it is often the deciding factor.

How we keep it honest

Data is pulled daily from primary sources — the GitHub API, Docker Hub and GHCR, the App Store, and package indexes such as Flathub, Homebrew, WinGet, AUR, F-Droid and IzzyOnDroid. Content is drafted with AI assistance from that database and reviewed by a human before it goes live, and every field carries a verification date. The full pipeline, freshness rules and cross-checks are on theMethodology page.

What we don't do

Who runs this

SelfHostedCompare is an independent project built by self-hosters, for self-hosters. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any of the software projects it covers, and it carries no vendor relationships that influence coverage.

How the site stays free

The site is free to use and supported by advertising. Ad partners and cookies are disclosed in the Privacy Policy; we do not sell personal information, and visitors in the EEA and UK get a consent choice before personalized ads are served.

What's next

More app profiles, comparison pages for high-intent pairs, platform × category pages, and a filterable stack finder. Coverage grows from community corrections as much as from our own pipeline — if a number is wrong, tell us and we will fix it within 48 hours (seeContact).
