How this site handles data, cookies and advertising — in plain language, with the legal names where they matter.

The short version.
- No account is needed to read anything, and we never ask for personal information.
- We do not sell personal information for money.
- Third-party advertising — currently Google AdSense — uses cookies to serve ads, including personalized ads where consent has been given.
- Visitors in the EEA and UK see a consent choice (Google consent mode) before ad cookies are set.
- Privacy questions and requests: [email protected].
Who we are
SelfHostedCompare (selfhostedcompare.com) is an independent, advertising-supported comparison site for self-hosted software. For any privacy question or request, email [email protected]. For data corrections, see theContact page.
What information we collect
Information you give us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in the message. We use it only to answer you and to handle corrections or requests, and we keep the correspondence only as long as needed for that purpose. We do not add you to any mailing list.
Information collected automatically
- Hosting and security. The site is served by Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes request data such as IP address, timestamp and user agent to deliver pages and to block abuse (bots, attacks). This processing is covered byCloudflare's privacy policy.
- Advertising. Our ad partner Google sets cookies and similar technologies when ads are shown, as described under Cookies and Third-party advertising below.
- We do not run third-party web analytics. Search-traffic data we look at comes from Google Search Console, which is aggregate and sits on Google's side, not ours.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files a site can store in your browser. This site itself sets no cookies: it is a static site, and everything you need to read is delivered without one. Cookies appear only when advertising is shown, set by our advertising partner.
- Google advertising cookies (for example the DoubleClick
IDEcookie) are used to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites, to limit how often you see the same ad, and to measure ad performance. - Consent state. For visitors in the EEA and UK, Google's consent management platform (Funding Choices) records your consent choice so that it is applied on later visits.
- You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings at any time; blocking advertising cookies only makes ads less relevant — it does not break the site.
Third-party advertising
The site is free and supported by advertising. The disclosures below follow Google's requirements for publishers:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads on this site, based on your prior visits to this website and/or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- You may also opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info/choices (US) or www.youronlinechoices.eu (EU).
- Where ads are not personalized, they are selected using contextual information (the content of the page) instead of a profile built from cookies.
For details on how Google handles information from sites that use its services, see theGoogle partner-sites policyand the Google Privacy Policy. If we ever switch ad networks (for example to Journey by Mediavine, Mediavine or Raptive), this policy is updated before the switch and the new partner's practices are disclosed here.
EEA, UK and Switzerland — consent
For visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, we use Google's consent mode together with a Funding Choices consent message:
- Ad cookies default to denied until you make a choice; ads are served non-personalized until consent is given.
- You can give, refuse or change your choice at any time through the consent message's manage-options control, and you can withdraw consent by clearing cookies or using the opt-out links above.
- Consent is the legal basis for advertising cookies (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)); serving pages and blocking abuse rely on legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- Google and its partners may process data outside your country, including in the United States, under appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

California (CCPA/CPRA) — your rights
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information is collected, to correct it, to delete it, to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, to limit use of sensitive personal information, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
- We do not sell personal information for money. Because some advertising technologies are treated as "sharing" under the CPRA, you can opt out of that sharing via Google Ads Settingsand aboutads.info/choices.
- To exercise any right by email, write to[email protected]with the subject

Children's privacy
The site is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 where applicable), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
Data retention and security
We keep no user accounts and store no personal profiles. Email correspondence is kept only as long as needed to handle the request it belongs to. The site is static, hosted by Cloudflare; there is no application database of reader data to breach.
